MRI Scans

  • Have you been told you'll have to wait for your MRI scan?

  • Get your scan in the U.S. within 24 hours once you have your doctor's requisition or when you are ready to travel to Buffalo Monday - Saturday

  • Be sure your scanner is high quality - some discounted scanning centres are using old equipment and do not qualify for US insured patients.  Don't be fooled by discount prices.

  • Choose the best quality experience with Buffalo General Hospital.  It's close to the border and it's hospital level care that you can trust.

  • Canadians - do not wait when it is your health!

This procedure requires a physician's referral from your Canadian family doctor or Canadian specialist or chiropractor for scans in Buffalo

Buffalo Niagara MRI Center: Overview

The Buffalo Niagara MRI Center provides the most advanced MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) technology and services available in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

We have created a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can relax and feel pampered from the waiting room to the examining room.

Our staff strives to make your MRI experience a positive one. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask anyone on our team. We look forward to helping you.

What is MRI?

MRI is a painless procedure used to provide highly detailed images of the body. An MRI allows physicians to view the inside of the body without surgery or X-ray radiation.

The MRI scanner works by creating a strong magnetic field and sends radio waves (similar to those of your favorite FM radio station) into the body. The waves are measured by a computer and translated into remarkably clear images.

The use of MRI is often critical to the early detection and accurate diagnosis of a variety of illnesses and injuries, allowing physicians to initiate treatment as soon as possible.

Your MRI Scan

Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to your exam to allow time to complete the necessary medical forms. Be sure to have your health or insurance card with you, as well as a doctor’s prescription for the scan, and please feel free to ask questions at any time.

A technologist will meet with you to discuss your medical history and answer any questions you might have. The technologist will keep this brief, so it shouldn't take longer than the average time we spend filling out life insurance or credit card forms. Please tell the technologist if you have the following: pacemaker, aneurysm clip, biostimulators, defibrillator, implant(s), history of eye injuries, claustrophobia or if you could be pregnant.

Your MRI will last between 30 and 60 minutes – depending on the study being performed. You can leave immediately after the procedure.

You will be assisted onto a scanning table and given cushions to ensure your comfort. During the scan you will hear a series of knocking sounds which are part of the imaging process. We will provide earphones so you can listen to the radio or you can bring in your favorite music CD for your listening pleasure.

Some examinations require the use of a contrast medium, which will be injected by a very small needle into a vein in your arm.

You must lie still during the scan for the best results. There are microphones, which the technologist can use to communicate with you during the scan if necessary.

A board certified radiologist who specializes in MRI will interpret your scan, and a report will be available to your physician within 24 hours.

Preparing for your MRI

  • Unless otherwise specified, there are no special preparations or dietary restrictions for your exam. You can eat, drink and do what you normally would.

  • Continue to take any medications that have been prescribed by your doctor, and please dress comfortably when you come for your scan. Many people bring workout clothes such as sweatshirts and knit pants (without metal part for drawstring) to wear during their scan.

  • Since metal objects can ruin the test, you will be required to remove certain objects such as jewelry, glasses, and clothing with zippers, snaps or buttons. If your clothing contains these items, you will be asked to remove them and you will be given comfortable clothing to wear. A locker will be provided for securing your valuables and personal items.

  • If you are scheduled for an MRI of your head or neck, please do not wear make-up.
