PET is the short form for Positron Emission Tomography. PET is used as a cancer screening tool.

PET imaging uses a "sugar" solution (known as FDG) In the body, PET is used in cancer detection and treatment (oncology) to detect malignant cancer cells since those cells "burn the sugar" at a higher rate than normal cells.
